Hyder Edward Rollins (1889-1958) was born in Abilene, Texas. In 1910 he received a B.A. from Southwestern University, an M.A. from the University of Texas in 1912, and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1917. In 1919 he went to Europe on a Harvard Sheldon Traveling Fellowship and in 1920 he was appointed assistant professor at New York University, becoming a full professor four years later. O. Henry was born as William Sydney Porter on September 11, 1862 in Greensboro, NC. He worked as a pharmacist in Greensboro and moved to Texas for his health in 1882 where he became a ranch hand. Porter relocated to Austin, TX and worked as a pharmacists, served as draftsman at the Texas General Land Office, a teller at First National Bank of Austin, and started a humorous weekly magazine, The Rolling Stone.
